Cops (Directed by Buster Keaton & Edward F. Kline, 1922, 18 mins, 8mm, b&w, silent)
PRESENTED ON 8MM FILM! In this Kafka-esque short our protagonist is romantically rejected, fails in financial matters & battles an entire police department. Even though his intentions are good, he can't win, no matter how inventively he tries... Arguably the iconic comedy chase film, Cops is one of Keaton's most brilliantly-constructed short films. In 1997, the film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.
act da fool (Directed by Harmony Korine, 2010, 4 mins, color, sound, digital projection)
Commissioned by the Proenza Schouler fashion house, this short film is made up of hazy 8mm vignettes that are centered around a group of young girls in Nashville & is regarded as a "religious film" by the director. A soft female voice-over speaks to the girls' experiences with loneliness, friendship, confusion & society while picturing them in public areas painting graffiti, drinking & embracing each other.
Over The Edge (Directed by Jonathan Kaplan, 1979, 95 mins, color, sound, digital projection)
The twentieth-century cult film of teenage rebellion. Over The Edge tells the story of a group of bored teenagers who fight back against the police, their school and their parents in the suburban planned community of New Granada. Based on real-life events, the film "is a sensitive and deceptively shocking portrait of middle-class decadence and alienation set against an impersonal, dehumanized, futuristic Sunbelt society." In his debut acting role, 14 year old Matt Dillon delivers lines that would go on to be sampled by musicians for decades to come ("I only got one law. A kid who tells on another kid is a dead kid"). Upon initial release in 1979 the film only received a brief, limited theatrical presentation before being pulled in fear that it would incite a riot.
